“Beyond the Bolex” (2017) - When Alyssa Bolsey started film school, she researched the life of her great-grandfather, medical student and camera designer Jacques Bolsey (born Yakov Bogopolsky), and discovered that Jacques was the inventor of the Bolex 16mm movie camera later used by such filmmakers as Maya Deren, Michel Gondry, Barbara Hammer, Peter Jackson, Spike Jonze, David Lynch, Jonas Mekas, Christopher Nolan, and Wim Wenders. The Fablemans (2022) shows a teenage stand-in for Steven Spielberg using a Bolex to film a violent war film with his neighborhood pals.

The first-person documentary Beyond the Bolex (2018)—our third Toy Sheep event of spring 2024—follows Alyssa’s journey to understand how her great-grandfather’s camera and creativity thrived despite the tumultuous global circumstances (the Depression, World War II, the Holocaust) that influenced Jacques’ life. Our program includes an introduction by Appalachian State professor Tom Hansell, a proficient Bolex operator, who will share images from his in-process experimental documentary Impoundment that were shot with a Bolex.

This event is co-sponsored with Awesome Space, and will be held in the Community Room of the Appalachian Theatre of the High Country, 559 West King Street, Boone, NC. Doors open at 8pm, and the show starts at 8:30pm. This event is FREE (though donations are gratefully accepted) and open to the public.

Reviews of Beyond the Bolex have praised the film’s “surprising intersection of personal experience and historical revelation” (Richard Brody, The New Yorker) and its heartfelt tribute to “Jacques’ brilliance” (Christopher Reed, Hammer to Nail). Join us for this not-to-be-missed screening of Beyond the Bolex, Tom Hansell’s introduction, and other surprises! Runtime: 1hr. 31 min This film is not rated.

Donations will be accepted and appreciated to support The Awesome Space.
