About the Appalachian Theatre

Education

The Appalachian Theatre provides opportunities for children, families and adults to engage with the performing arts through a variety of educational events, performances and workshops.

  • Our Wednesday theatre tours include a walk-through of our historic 1938 venue, insight into the theatre's history, and a 15-minute short film chronicling the evolution of the space from first-hand perspectives. Tour goers explore the theatre's historical photo gallery, hear stories and anecdotes about the venue, learn about its role throughout the years, and visit the audience and backstage areas of the newly-refurbished theatre. Tours last approx. 45 minutes and include a short documentary. Please be aware that the Appalachian Theatre is a working theatre and some spaces may not always be available.

  • The Appalachian Theatre is excited to begin offering its field trip series during the 2023-24 school year. These school-day opportunities will provide students opportunities to encounter the performing arts in our beautiful historic theatre.

  • Appalachian Theatre Summer Musical Theatre Camps are open to students entering grades 3 through 8 at the start of the 2024-25 school year. Performance camps provide opportunities for participants to develop musical theatre technique by singing, dancing and acting while honing their solo and ensemble skills. Camps conclude with a showcase performance on the stage of the Appalachian Theatre. Camps require participation and engagement with the goal of creating a final performance product. No experience required, but campers must show interest in exploring acting, singing, dancing, movement and performance.

Camps are led by a musical theatre educator who holds a professional teaching certificate in Music and Theatre from the state of North Carolina. Adjunct instructors, guest artists and staff are either certified educators or graduates of or students in undergraduate theatre programs with experience in acting, music and/or dance.
